Maternity Care
The Academic Family Health Team (FHT) provides pregnancy care for patients of the FHT, as well for patients who get their care elsewhere. FHT patients can receive care throughout the pregnancy from the family medicine-obstetrical providers (FMOB), and then return to their usual provider with their baby after birth. Patients who have a family doctor in the community can be seen during their pregnancy and then return to their regular family doctor after birth, with their newborn baby.
Program Activities/Offerings and Descriptions:
Routine prenatal care is provided with monthly visits until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and then weekly in the last month of pregnancy. The FHT is a teaching site for young doctors, and there is usually a learner in the clinic. The FMOB physicians work with a call group of other family doctors to ensure that patients have access to care 24/7. All deliveries occur at the Civic Hospital.
Both sites of the family health team have social workers and dietitians, available to provide support and guidance if needed. Our practice is to encourage and support breastfeeding while respecting patient preferences.
How can the program be accessed:
Family doctors can facilitate the referral, or the patient can call directly and explain that they are pregnant and need pregnancy care.
